NETWORKING EVENT - The Evolving Role of the Administrative Executive
11 JUNE 2008 17:30 - 19:30 ICAP OFFICES 47 Northumberland Road Kensington Johannesburg R85.50 (including VAT)
There need for continuous professional development for today’s new and empowered PAs / Executive Secretaries
The secretarial profession has grown in leaps and bounds over the last couple of years and in order to keep up with the changing trends in the workplace, it is necessary for secretaries / office professionals to keep abreast with the changes by doing continuous learning. By building up your skills and knowledge, you will find that there are many more opportunities in the workplace for you to aspire to. Along with the growth in the profession, job descriptions are expanding and new titles are being created, some which now include; Office Managers, Office Professionals and Administrative Professionals.
It has been found that for most office professionals today, much more is expected from them in the workplace. Because the nature of secretarial work is changing drastically – managers are doing their own correspondence and more files are being stored electronically.
Dawn Williams of the Institute for Certified Administrative Professionals (ICAP) will be discussing the “Evolving role of the Secretary” at the ICAP networking event on the 11 June 2008 at ICAP in Johannesburg.
Topics to be discussed:
· The role of the secretary / assistant · Moving out of your comfort zone · How to add value to your role · The importance of continuous learning · What is certification and what certifications are available · What training courses to attend (including discussion on unit standards, assessments etc) · Qualities of a true administrative professional.
Dawn started her career off by attending a Private Secretarial course at Wits Technikon in 1979. She then went on to work in various secretarial positions at Old Mutual, Freight Services and the Liberty Life Group, where she held various posts in IT and Human Resources, ranging from secretarial to administration and training to call centre supervisor. In 2000, after 15 years with the Liberty Group, she decided to join Ann Cameron at Competency Services in the role of Personal Assistant. In January 2006, Ann Cameron and Dawn took over the management of the ICAP, as they saw the need to assist existing and potential administrative professionals to achieve excellence through continuing studies and to uplift the role of the administrative professional in the business community. ICAP is the authorised, licensed, exclusive agent for the International Association of Administrative Professionals in administering the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) and the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) exams in Southern Africa. She is involved in training the Office Systems, Office Technology and Administration modules at the pre examination seminars for these programs. Dawn has also completed the Microsoft international certifications (MOS) and is a Master Instructor for Microsoft Office."
